Luck-One and Dekk’s “Beautiful Music Part II” made me remember why I loved Hip-Hop

For a few years, I had given up on Hip Hop.  I felt that all of the lyrics were misogynistic, too conventional, and overall worthless.  As sad as it sounds, it was how I felt.  One of the classes I took in college was, Mass Media and Society.  That class was amazing.  The teacher I had was a Muslim African American graduate student, who I grew very fond of.  After class we would talk about different societal issues that plagued our communities.  I confessed to her  that I hated Hip Hop.  I would like to go on record stating that I no longer feel this way.

In the middle of one of our conversations she mentioned Black Star album.  I had never heard of it.  To this day Taalib Kweli and Yasin Bey (then known as Mos Def) are probably two of my favorite Emcees.  From that day forth, I’ve loved Hip-Hop.  Underground Hip-Hop is what I love most.  The artists are unrefined and pure.  They don’t care about trying to fit in with the conventional Hip Hop that you hear on the radio. Instead, they delve deeper.

It was yesterday when I blogged about  The Good Sin, a rapper from Seattle, Washington.  In the midst of a  Twitter dialogue with him he told me to check out another artist, Luck-One Conscious.  If you know me you know that I never turn down the opportunity to listen to new music.  I figured I should give him a chance.  After all, I was already a fan of his (The Good Sin) so if he’s recommending another artist I need to check out, I should listen to him.  I’m glad I did.

Luck-One reminds me of Back Star.  He’s not overly pro Black to the point of vexation.  His delivery is symphonious, smooth, and sweet.  His content is relevant.  After one listen, Luck-One won me over.  I highly recommend his new album, Beautiful Music Part II, another collaboration with Producer Dekk.  Between Luck-One’s rhetoric and Dekk’s phenomenal production, this is a true Hip-Hop album.  I know it’s a mix tape but I feel that it’s an album, but I digress.

Luck-One and The Good Sin are both great Emcees who deserve more shine.  If you’re in Seattle, Washington on this weekend, you must attend their album release party on Saturday, March 3rd at The Crocodile.  I wish I could be there.

The Good Sin, “The Story of Love x Hate”

A few weeks ago I came across a Seattle based rapper and fell in love.  I can’t explain what is is that draws me in, but there is a certain quality about The Good Sin that I like.  I can definitely hear the Shabazz Palaces influence in his music.  I HIGHLY recommend this album!  There aren’t many emcee’s left, and I think he lives up to the title.
